Kwun Chung Street Hotel is a ground-up and free-standing redevelopment in the Jordan District in Hong Kong. The project site is at the heart of the famed street markets on Bowring and Temple Street, also within a mixed use neighborhood with wet market, restaurants, recycled center, automobile maintenance center, gymnasium, convenience stores, serviced business center, municipal building, etc. Variety is the theme of the neighborhood.
In our initial thoughts, besides grounding the project within the unique fabrics of Jordan neighborhood, in terms of overall design we focused on developing architectural details of the facade system instead of the overall building geometry. This is mostly due to the reality that in Hong Kong most developers are destined to maximize their projects’ Gross Floor Area without much room for flexibility. We see this constraint as a challenge instead of limitation, this process helps us to explore ideas on guest room window bays, indoor natural lighting, and prefabrication and modularization means.
Kwun Chung Street Hotel shall accommodate 99 Guest Rooms with Shops, Cafe, Health Facility, and a Sky Garden. For the typical floor plate of 172 sm we provided a layout of 7 rooms, averaging about 18 sm per room in addressing the client’s room keys requirement.
